History of Our Church

Chapel 2In the spring of 1952, Rev. J.M. Schedler and the Church Council of Trinity Lutheran Church secured pre-emption from the Regional Home mission Committee to meet the worship needs of a growing Victoria.  Seminarians Wilfred Menke and Hugo Rathkamp surveyed the pre-empted section of Victoria under the direction of the Board of American Missions, who then authorized the establishment of a mission in the fall of 1952.

In January 1953, the Texas Synod Mission Committee authorized the project as a parish with Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Coletoville.  Rev. Frank Broesicke was appointed as the mission developer by the Board of American Missions.

On February 1, 1953, Rev. Broesicke began the mission development with the first services being held on May 3, 1953 at the American Legion Hall on Navarro Street.  Twenty-nine persons attended.  Two months later, the first Sunday School session was held with thirty persons in attendance.  For approximately one year, services were conducted by Rev. Boesicke.  Lucille (Willemin) Sievers of Martin Luther Lutheran Church served as organist.

Late in 1953, Fred and Louisa (Schutz) Urban, members of Trinity Lutheran Church, very generously donated the property at the corner of Crestwood and Ben Jordan Streets as the site for a new church.  A building program was begun immediately.  The mission congregation received an Easter offering gift from Trinity Lutheran Church and this gift was later supplemented by a gift from Martin Luther Lutheran Church.

On February 28, 1954, a pre-organized service was held with the reception of all charter members, adoption of the constitution and election of the first church council, now called the Vestry.  Elected to the council were: Oscar Kohl, Louis Schultz, Carl Brugmann, Jr., Walter Korges, Johnnie R. Pippert, Robert Pilzner, Clifton Huehner, Alton H. Wachtendorff, and Henry Heinrich, Jr.  The new congregation was formally organized with fifty-seven charter members on March 7, 1954, at Trinity Lutheran Church by Synod President, Rev. Royal E. Lesher.  Some six months later, on September 15, Rev. Nathaniel H. Kern was installed as the first called pastor of Our Saviour's United Evangelical Lutheran Church.

In 1955 Our Saviour's was given the church building at Kilgore to tear down for use in the construction of the first unit of the new church.  The members of the congregation took down the building board and hauled the material to the new church site.  On October 26, 1956 the first service in the first unit at the present site was held with 187 persons in attendance.

By 1963 the church was "bursting at the seams" and Delbert R. Crocker was hired as architect to develop plans for a new sanctuary.  On September 29, 1964 the contract was let to Don Krueger Construction Company to remodel the first unit and build the new church.  Finally complete dedication day was set for May 16, 1965.

Two years later Rev. Gordon W. Spong was installed as pastor at Our Saviour's, lovingly and faithfully serving the congregation for seventeen years, until his retirement in 1984.

Pastor's who have served the congregation since include:

Sanctuary 002

In June 2003, ground was broken for a new sanctuary and music center, as well as an expansion of the Multi-purpose room and a complete remodeling of the adult classroom wing.  Again, Krueger Construction Company was engaged to complete the construction.  The adult classroom wing was part of the original church facility built with lumber received from the church at Kilgore in 1955.  A portion of this original structure was incorporated into the newly remodeled structure to carry forward the missionary history of the congregation.  The first service was held in the new sanctuary on Maundy Thursday, April 2004 with 383 in attendance.  On Easter Sunday 758 attended services.

On March 7, 2004, the church observed its 50th anniversary with a casual celebration in the solarium honoring the founding families and leaderships over the years.
